Founder & Executive Director
Axel Doerwald
Axel started Lark Scientific after a 35 year career in the tech industry building enterprise software primarily for the grocery industry. He is the founder of Invatron now known as Invafresh, a global leader in fresh food operations management that helps grocery retailers reduce food waste and optimize inventory to meet sales demand. Now in use across thousands of grocery stores across North America, retailers are seeing a 40% drop in food waste on average once the system is deployed resulting in millions of tons of food waste no longer ending up in landfill sites. After selling the business in 2019, Axel has been devoting time to philanthropy and is engaged in venture capital investing across Canada helping fund early-stage technology companies at seed round and Series A with a focus on sustainable tech. During a 6500 nm (nautical mile) sailing expedition across the Atlantic in 2019, he came up with the vision for Lark Scientific to perform research and deep analysis into climate mitigation strategies and green energy transformative technologies. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with family, sailing, scuba diving and is a musician and song-writer. After becoming a paraplegic due to a hiking accident in 1999, he is also an adaptive sports enthusiast focused primarily on handcycling and both downhill and cross-country sit-skiing.
